Youth Ministry Mission Statement:
Missioner for Youth Ministry
I. Background:
The Diocese of Southern Virginia has historically placed a high value on the participation of youth in the church’s life, both at the local parish and diocesan levels. At various times in the diocese’s history this high value has been manifest in different ways: youth programs, Camp Chanco, and a part-time or full-time member of the diocesan staff. During Bishop Buchanan’s interim, a team of lay and clergy persons involved in youth ministry were charged with:
- Eliciting feedback from churches regarding past and present diocesan youth
ministry and to evaluate current needs in youth ministry in the churches of the
nine convocations of the diocese in addition to other tasks - Recommending a structure to the Bishop for pursuing youth ministry on the
diocesan level - Recommending funding and personnel needs to the Bishop
- Developing a position description for the recommended personnel needs (in
addition to other tasks).
To accomplish this task, the team conducted one-on-one interviews with youth and adults, attended diocesan youth events, and conducted a survey of youth, youth workers
and rectors. The (following) position description reflects what the team learned from this feedback process.

I appreciate all of the hard work that the Youth Ministry Transition Team completed. It is obvious that a great deal of effort and research went into this report. I was keenly aware of their recommendations relating to Chanco and the new YM as a member of the "Camp Chanco" Board. While Chanco on the James has a Board of Directors, "Camp Chanco" does not. However, there is a "Camp Chanco" subcommittee whose focus is on our youth in summer camp, brainstorming new ideas, reviewing and improving the activities, etc. The new Youth Minister would be a welcome addition to that committee and could hopefully bring new experiences and ideas to our camp programs.
My name is Justin Davis and i like every thing except for the way board members are choosen. It seems to take away the whoel aspect of the youth deciding their leaders. The youth should have the main say in who is elected to run their program. It just seems to make more sense the wayit is now.
